Maybe you’re an avid triathlete. Maybe you’re just looking for a taste of endurance competition. Regardless of your experience, the Nevis Triathlon is sure to top your personal podium of favorite races.

This three-part contest is dubbed "the most beautiful challenge in triathlon" for good reason. From the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea to the rolling terrain of Nevis itself, the course’s stunning scenery helps competitors take their minds off of the task at hand.

However, that isn’t to say that this race is a pushover.

From its starting line on Oualie Beach, the triathlon takes participants out and around the island. The event’s organizers planned different races for athletes of different skill levels: Novices can opt for the Try-a-Tri — a 100-meter swim followed by a five-kilometer bike and finished by a two-kilometer run — while more seasoned athletes can push themselves on a standard Olympic-sized course.

Not a strong swimmer? Not to worry: The 2019 edition of the event will be the first to feature a duathlon, one that’s bound to pose a stiff test.

The inaugural duathlon will open with a two-kilometer, roundtrip run towards the airport. After returning to the starting line, racers will hop into the saddle for a 31-kilometer bike ride up steep hills, down bumpy roads, and around the perimeter of the island. One final transition will leave contestants five kilometers from finishing, a final race to the Mount Nevis Hotel and back is the ultimate challenge of the day.

Thanks to its growing reputation, the Nevis Triathlon has drawn competitors from as far as Slovakia in years past. But despite its competitive nature, the event remains friendly at heart. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal. After the races conclude, an awards ceremony honors the top three finishers in each category, rewarding each with a trophy crafted from Nevisian stone. Afterward, athletes and onlookers are invited to a beachfront barbecue to celebrate another well-run race.

True to its welcoming spirit, the Nevis Triathlon is an all-ages event. Contestants as young as eight years old may compete in the Try-a-Tri division, and 16-year-olds are eligible to run the full race. What’s more: None of the event’s eight categories feature an age cap. Whether you're 25 or 85, you can feel the thrill of being cheered to the finish line.

The race is affordable, too. Standard entry fees begin at USD$60, and early bird rates knock 15 percent off all listed prices.

So, whether it’s first race or your hundredth, the Nevis Triathlon is a must-run. Sign up, and add another medal to your collection.
